Accelerated Resolution Therapy in South Tampa
What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that uses rapid eye movements similar to the eye movements that occur during dreaming. ART’s very specific and directive approach can achieve rapid recovery from symptoms and reactions, even ones that have been present for many years.

ART can be used to treat:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Phobias
- Grief
- Trauma and Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
How does it work?
ART works to reprogram the way distressing memories and images are stored in the brain so they no longer trigger strong physical and emotional reactions. Eye movements have a very calming effect. In experiencing ART, you may find that you connect pieces of information that are already stored in your memory to help you resolve your issues. When the brain is focused on a problem and concurrently using eye movements, it is able to make new connections with your existing strengths and problem-solving abilities.
Is ART different than EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing which is another evidence-based psychotherapy. It was originally developed in the 1980s for trauma and PTSD. ART uses the same eye movements as EMDR but ART has a more directive approach that may lead to a faster recovery.
About the technique
I sit in front of you, slightly to one side, and have you follow my hand with your eyes while you think about your problem. You will be moving only your eyes, not your head. I will be asking you to notice any body sensations as we go along so distressing sensations can dissipate and positive feelings can be enhanced. You will still have the memory of the facts, you will just lose the negative images, sensations and feelings. After using ART, clients have often been able to replace negative images and sensations with positive ones.
